Bumthang is the spiritual heartland of Bhutan, home to some of the oldest temples in the kingdom. This journey moves slowly between Jambay Lhakhang, Kurjey Lhakhang and the Burning Lake, with time for butter-lamp offerings, prayer with resident monks and quiet evenings in a family farmhouse.

Day by day

  1. 1

    Arrive in Paro

    Meet your guide at the airport and drive to Thimphu. Evening walk to the Memorial Chorten.

  2. 2

    Over the Pele La

    Cross the Dochula and Pele La passes, raising prayer flags along the way, to Trongsa.

  3. 3

    Trongsa to Bumthang

    Visit Trongsa Dzong and the Tower of Trongsa before reaching Jakar.

  4. 4

    Jambay & Kurjey

    Dawn prayers at Jambay Lhakhang, then the three temples of Kurjey.

  5. 5

    Tamshing & Kenchosum

    An audience with a lama and teachings on the Nyingma lineage.

  6. 6

    The Burning Lake

    Offer butter lamps at Mebar Tsho and walk through Tang valley.

  7. 7

    Farmhouse day

    Cook with a local family and soak in a hot stone bath.

  8. 8

    Return west

    Drive to Punakha with a stop at Chimi Lhakhang.

  9. 9

    Depart

    Transfer to Paro for your onward flight.
